What We Believe

Converse Church of Christ is an independent congregationalist Christian church. We are directed by a board of trustees, elders, and deacons, who appoint ministers to shepherd the congregation. This Statement of Faith has been approved by the church board:
  • We affirm the Bible to be the inspired Word of God, eternally reliable in all matters of Christian faith and practice (2 Tim. 3:16,17; 2 Peter 1:19-21).
  • We affirm that there is one God (Deut. 6:4), creator of all (Col. 1:16,17), who is all-powerful, all-knowing (Heb. 4:13), perfect and eternal (Psalm 90:2).
  • We affirm that God exists in the persons of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Jude 20,21; Mark 1:9-11; Heb. 2:34; 2 Cor. 13:14).
  • We affirm that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and Lord of all (Acts 2:32-36). We affirm His virgin birth (Luke 1:26-31), sinless life (Heb. 4:15), miracles (Heb. 2:3,4), atoning death (2 Cor. 5:21), bodily resurrection (Matt. 28:5-7), and ascension to the Father's right hand (Heb. 1:3,13).
  • We affirm that Jesus Christ will return to earth personally in power and glory and judgment (Matt. 24:29-31; Acts 1:10,11; 1 Thess. 4:14-16; 2 Tim. 4:1).
  • We affirm that salvation is by grace through faith in our Lord Jesus Christ and that repentance, faith, and regeneration are necessary to salvation (Eph. 2:8; Rom. 10:8-10; Luke 7:48-50; Titus 3:3-7; 1 Peter 1:3-9).
  • We affirm the present ministry of the Holy Spirit to indwell Christians (Acts 2:38; Rom. 8:11), enabling them to live godly lives and that the Holy Spirit gives one or more gifts to each believer (Eph. 4:11-13; Rom. 12:6-8; 1 Cor. 12:11,12).
  • We affirm believer's baptism by immersion in obedience to our Lord Jesus Christ (Matt. 28:18-20; Rom. 6:3-6; 1 Peter 3:18-22; Acts 2:38).
  • We affirm the Table of our Lord, the Lord's Supper, is open to all believers (1Cor. 11:23-29; Matt. 26:26-29).
  • We affirm the priesthood of all believers, making every effort to equip and release the "Royal Priesthood" to the work of the ministry (1 Peter 2:9,10; 2 Tim. 3:16,17).
  • We affirm the sacredness of Christian marriage and teach all believers to walk in chastity and marital faithfulness (Heb. 13:4; 1Cor 7:2-9; Matt. 19:4-6).
  • We affirm that God governs His church through a plural local eldership (Titus 1:5; Acts 14:23; 1 Tim. 5:17; James 5:14).
