In the Biblical & Ancient World - Caller Articles

Southern hospitality is deeply imbedded in the culture of the southwestern United States. We see this style of hospitality as being polite or friendly and as a means of entertaining. I think we have used the Southern hospitality so much in our association with friend, neighbors, and other family members, that we have translated that as being the biblical form of hospitality. But our care for the stranger tends to be a monetary gift rather than a personal touch.

Hospitality customs in the biblical world related to two classes of people; the traveler and the live in alien. Both of these we define as one who does not belong to a particular community or group. It also implies a triangular relationship between host, stranger, and God.

The host has an obligation of three things to the traveling stranger and those are food, water, and shelter, as seen in the Abraham story of Genesis 18: 1-8. Part of the goodness in hospitality is in receiving a person outside the community from whom one has no immediate expectation of the same in return. The people you help may never be in a position to help you and may even bring you harm. Still the hosts are obliged to extend themselves.

The stranger or traveler doing their part is to accept the offer. To refuse the offering of hospitality would be an insult to the host, but to accept is to show trust. The action implies that both parties are equally human and must eat to survive.

The Biblical hospitality code was so strong that we have a command from God in which to follow even today: "Do not neglect to show hospitality to stranger, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares" (Heb 13:2).

Keep your eyes open for opportunities to practice hospitality.

Greetings from Samaritan Room Ministries - Outreach Ministries

We are gearing up once again for our Christmas Outreach. Can you believe this will be out 27th year? WOW!! What an awesome God we serve!! He has blessed us with people that believe in this Outreach and tithe to us monthly. We couldn't do what has been done without your help-may God richly bless your lives. The prayer warriors that have kept us close to their hearts-thank you from the bottom of ours. Community groups and schools that support us--what a blessing! Lives being touched by people that truly love unconditionally is what this ministry is all about.

We receive phone calls daily for some sort of assistance-United Way filters Cass, Howard & Miami counties in Kokomo to agencies closest to the ones needing assistance. What a relief that is! We work with other agencies in Grant and Miami counties also.

Set-up for this year will be on Monday, December 8th at 8:00 a.m. with our Work Day scheduled for Wednesday, December 10th at 8:00 a.m. Along with the items on our Shopping List Calendar we can always use brown paper sacks for food items dispensed during the year.

We haven't had an article (shame on us!) all year to let you know we're still up and running. The donated funds received have allowed us to keep the pantry stocked. We also have a separate checking account for the Samaritan Room Ministry if you ever want to donate money. Through the year you can ALWAYS bring paper products, food or toiletries to the church-we'll make sure they get to the Samaritan Room.

The handicapped adults we've had a Christmas party for each year lost their president approximately 2 months ago. There have been so many in two years that have died very young, being overmedicated causes most to be heavy and creates a hardship on their bodies and they wear out. One lady wrote us a poem each year and was their spokesperson - we were told she put into words what was in their hearts. Connie passed away before Christmas last year-she was such a wonderful Christian lady and will be missed. There have been many that God allowed us to see become "His" before He took them home.

Please keep this ministry in your prayers and us also. This has been a tough year for so many families - lost jobs or layoffs, deaths, medical bills, fires, kids displaced and the list goes on and on --We are quietly serving in Jesus' name for you-our church family.

The prayers and funding has allowed us this privilege-when we tire, we always cling to Phil 4:13-We can do all things thru Christ who gives us strength".

  Because We Care,

  Bob & Kathy Taylor

One child, one hour is the heart of Kids Hope USA. One caring adult mentoring one child, one hour every week because when kids feel loved and valued they are better able to learn and grow and succeed!MENTORING: A friend or trusted guide (Webster)Influence: To have an effect by intangible means; to affect the condition of (Webster) The other day I was hanging out with a friend of mine. She probably doesn't know this but she has greatly influenced me. When I am with her she always has a smile and great attitude. It never fails, regardless of how grumpy I am; I come away from our time spent together with laughter in my heart and joy in my spirit. As I think back through my life, I have had a slew of mentors that have influenced my life; my father, a few particular friends, a Sunday school teacher, my children, etc... This particular friend that I am writing about influenced me in a different way than anyone else has. If I were in her shoes I would be grumpy and grouchy quite often. She has multiple hurdles that continually get in her way of living easy and comfortably. She lives on a very tight budget, parents alone, has some health problems, experiences continual car and appliance troubles, and most recently major flooding. Her home had so much water around it that in order to get into her home she had to wade through water up to her knees. Even then she was still joyful. I asked her if she and her child would like to stay with me until the water went down. She replied with a smile saying, "Oh, we are fine; it is not in my house yet!"Her attitude has caused me to check my grouchy attitude when little things don't go my way or I am a tad bit uncomfortable. When Oprah Winfrey was asked about mentoring she responded, "I don't think anybody makes it in the world without some form of mentorship. We are all mentors to people even when we don't know it." Cal Ripken says of Eddie Murray, his mentor, "he just put his arm around me and said that it was going to be okay! That is the ultimate mentoring story." Here is what others have to say about mentoring: "At first I was a bit nervous and apprehensive about our time together. Now I look forward to it and I even miss him a bunch between visits." Converse Church of Christ Kids Hope Mentor"Having children is easy - anybody can do it. Raising them is right hard! If someone wants to help me I'll take it!" Mother of a Kids Hope student"Are you going to be my mentor when I am a teenager? That will be okay if you want to. We will just call it Teen Hope When I get older, you will be really old then I can be your mentor and we will call it 'Old Man Hope'!" Cole Hovermale 2nd grader student said to Bob Eads his Kids Hope mentor.Take a moment to think of someone who has been an influence by mentoring you formally or informally. Perhaps they don't know the impact they made on your life. Perhaps you should acknowledge that person with kind words of appreciation. I am going to start on my long list today!Blessings, Pam GreenLet us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Gal. 6:9

Spouse: Brandon

CCC's Elementary Children's Ministry focuses on... helping kids become more like Jesus as they grow in Faith, Wisdom, and Friendship (Luke 2:52...and Jesus grew in wisdom and stature and favor with God and man.") equipping and encouraging volunteers as they honor Christ with their lives and invest in kids' lives

My kingdom prayer for CCC's children's ministry is that the kids and adults involved would grow in the grace, love, and knowledge of Jesus and that they'd share His love with others.

SUNDAY MORNINGS

CCC's Early Childood Ministries on Sunday morning include our Nursery (for infants through Toddlers) and Ark Park (for 2-year-olds through Kindergarteners). We offer care and/or programming for these little ones during each worship service, as well as during the Sunday School hours (at 8:30, 9:30 and 10:45 a.m.).

Infants (newborn-walkers):

CCC values the safety and well-being of each baby. Toys are cleaned and sanitized. I.D. and diaper bag tags for each child help keep everything organized and allow us to alert parents in the worship service should there be a need. Loving adult volunteers play with and care for these precious ones.

Toddlers (walkers-24 months):

Children learn about Jesus' love through singing and playing with God-loving teens and adults. Using Gospel Light's Little Blessings curriculum, simple Bible stories and concepts are introduced to this curious and wonderful age group. A foundation of faith begins in this young classroom.

Parents, for more information about what your toddlers are learning, be sure to check out the Parent's Home Page we send home monthly. In each home page, you'll find an overview of the month's teaching, a few developmental insights, and activity ideas to enjoy with your child. These resources are meant to help and encourage you in nurturing your child's faith at home.

Ark Park (2-year-olds through Kindergarteners):

Using The reThinkGroup's First Look curriculum (www.myfirstlook.org), we hope to help Ark Park kids take a first look at who God is and understand three basic truths...

God made me.
God loves me.
Jesus wants to be my friend forever.

During Large Group Worship (8:30 and 10:45), Ark Park kids worship God through song, offering, and prayer. Then, Scruffy and Danny (our beloved puppy and boy puppets) share their stories as young ones listen and learn. Finally, kids are introduced to the week's Bible story through creative teaching by our Large Group Worship Leader.

During the Sunday School hour (9:30), Ark Park kids hear the Bible story told in a new way, focus on a monthly memory verse, and take part in hands-on crafts and activities that reinforce the month's Bottom Line.

Parents, for more information about what your preschoolers are learning, be sure to check out the Small Talk cards we send home weekly. Please, take time to use these cards to continue faith conversations at home. Ask your child the Key Question, review the Bible story, and take avantage of the ideas provided in the Teachable Moments section.

Let's work together to lay a foundation of bibical truths in these young ones' lives, that they might grow to discover their own faith in God and become passionate follwers of Christ.

WEDNESDAY EVENINGS

Information coming soon about our Fall '08 Wednesday night programming!

Fiancé: Corey Hopkins

CCC's Early Childhood Ministry focuses on equipping and encouraging families and volunteers in helping infants through kindergarteners grasp developmentally appropriate concepts such as: God made me, God loves me, and Jesus wants to be my friend forever. Together with families and volunteers, we hope to lay the foundation needed for these young ones to lead Christ-centered lives. My prayer...is that every infant through kindergartener who comes through our doors would experience the love of Christ and discover a first taste of scripture and of who God and Jesus are; that families would feel confident in their role as primary faith-nurturers for their children; and that volunteers would be blessed to be a blessing and grow in their personal walk with the Lord as they serve.

Based on Luke 2:52, "... and Jesus grew in wisdom and stature and favor with God and man" 252 Basics is aimed at helping kids grow in wisdom, faith, and friendship. It is built around three Basic Truths every child should embrace according to what Jesus modeled in Luke 2:52. I need to make the wise choice. I can trust God no matter what. I should treat others the way I want to be treated.

Each month we focus on a different biblical virtue. Parents, for information about what your kids are learning check out the "refrigerator door" cards that are sent home each week. These cards contain tidbits about the virtue and Bible story that you can talk about at home throughout the week. There are also weekly "God Time" cards that have 4 days of weekly devotions you can do with your child or, for upper elementary kids, they can do on their own. We Value: Bible based teachingSafetyAge-appropriatenessFunIntentional shepherdingGood stewardshipA partnership with parents

The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ.
1 Corinthians 12:12
Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administrating God's grace in its various forms.
1 Peter 4:10

Servant ministries are an integral part of Converse Church of Christ. With our gifts we are to serve our brothers and sisters in Christ, to build them up in the Lord. Ministry is also for spreading the Gospel of Christ, that God's message of grace might be proclaimed to all the nations.

Lasting Gratitude - Unatached Articles

Towards the end of his book, End of the Spear, Steve Saint tells about the time he loaded his family into his plane to begin piloting their move back to the United States. He was so distracted by the overwhelming emotions which flooded at the thought of leaving behind his jungle family, that he nearly crashed into the trees. But thankfully, the plane made clearing in just the nick of time. After recounting this story, Steve writes, "gratitude is the shortest-lived human emotion." How quickly Steve's mind must have shifted from thoughts of gratitude for the sudden headwind which rescued him and his family from a likely fatal crash back to thoughts of grief and sorrow as he longed to stay in the jungle with the Waodani people.

Steve's comment on gratitude reminds me of the Israelites' complaints to Moses regarding God's provision to them as they approached the Promised Land. Take a look at Numbers 11:1-6. "All we ever see is this manna!" Talk about short-lived gratitude! First of all, God had just spared them from His raging fire which had killed some of their complaining friends. And more to the point, God had sent this manna to them from heaven! Yet, they still longed for the food that once satisfied them in Egypt. How quickly they had forgotten that the great food of Egypt never satisfied them without the accompaniment of pain and suffering under the Egyptian whip. Could they not see all that God was doing for them? Instead, all their attention was focused on what God wasn't doing for them. Have you ever been so distracted from God's blessings in your life because you were so focused on your unfulfilled desires? I know I have.

As we fast-approach Thanksgiving, let us not give any further truth to Steve's comment on gratitude and let us not be like the Israelites so focused on what we don't have rather than on the countless blessings God has so graciously poured out on us. Instead, let us "Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you who belong to Christ Jesus." (1 Thessalonians 5:18)

Read Psalm 136 and then try praying through Psalm 138. Continue with a spirit of gratitude which far outlasts November 22nd.

Tricia Rosenbalm

To the Heart of the matter… - Unatached Articles

Our congregation has a purpose statement that I'm sure all of you have heard, and many of you might even know before I write it here.

"Converse Church of Christ exists to help people become Christ centered in their daily lives."

That is no small task. As I sit here I am asking myself why is this such a big and at times such a daunting task? I don't know that I have the answer to that, but I think I do have an idea as to why this can be so difficult.

As a student ministry we operate under five biblical purposes that we are working to instill in our students. One of those purposes is Discipleship. Now that very over used and misunderstood word can bring to mind many things. Similar to the church's purpose statement the definition that we use for Discipleship is "to help students become more like Christ."

Again I ask myself, wow, how can we do that? I can't make students love God. I can't force them to act in a manner worthy of the calling God has on their lives. I can't make them memorize scripture. What is it that we can do?

I know that at times I have felt an urgency to act, when in reality the urgency came from my perspective being way off. As we think about making disciples within the Youth Ministry our view must remain focused on the fact that we are striving to help students develop habits and spiritual disciplines needed to grow on their own, after leaving this ministry.

In some respects my job is to help students develop a spiritual independence. If a student is only growing from what we offer as a ministry, we have failed! When they leave this ministry after graduating, the one thing that they were using to grow will be gone. If we don't help students develop habits and a heart desiring to grow on their own, we will have missed the mark.

Our goal is to help students, from this church and in this community, come to a more complete understanding of what it means to follow Christ. And following Christ is not finding a destination, it is a journey, a lifetime of following Jesus. A journey that will take them far beyond this ministry.

Are you growing in your relationship with and knowledge of Christ? Think for a minute...what are you doing to grow right now? Are you studying scripture? Are you spending any time in prayer? Are you serving others in His name? Are you spending any time in quiet, to listen?

Would you like to help us instill a desire in the lives and minds of students? I would love to share this ministry with you! Let's talk!

Recently I saw a Kids Hope student on the Sweetser Switch Trail. His friend asked who I was. He responded, "She's the Friend Finder!" He went on to explain to his friend more about my job. He said that I know a bunch of adults that need a good friend so I go to the elementary school and find neat kids, like him, to be their friend. The friend responded with, "Wow that's a tight job!" ( I think that means a great job!) He then offered his services to me in case I had anymore "Needy Adults!"

On Sunday Kyle shared with us about true worship. I love the word picture he gave us. He said true worship is not like a buffet or smorgasbord where we get to pick and choose. True worship is like a soup kitchen with a line a mile long. The believer is not in the line waiting for soup, he is on the other side of the counter with the ladle in his hand dishing out the soup. By our service to God we are offering true worship. This year, in the friend finding ministry of Kids Hope, 40 "needy adults" will be holding hands instead of ladles as they serve Christ in the elementary schools (and 1 Jr. Higher) These adults are worshipping Christ out of love. That love spills out to Serving Him which then spills out to the community. A mentor once put it this way - "I am an ambassador of Christ's. When I wear His love and walk into that school anyone I come into contact with will get a dose of His love. They can choose to be affected by it or not. I am just responsible to share it with whomever I come into contact with. That might be teachers, students, parents, janitors - I'm not partial I am just doing what God calls me to do - Love."

Serving in Love,
Pam

You Matter To God - Unatached Articles

You Matter to God

Does God really have a plan for my life? God cares
about what we do. He cares about the details of our
lives because they are a barometer of the condition of
our hearts (Psalm 139:3). God's plans for us are always
for good. Unknown plans can be frightening, but
when the plans belong to God, we can rest assured
that we can expect something marvelous (Psalm
138:8). God definitely wants to help us follow the path
that will be most pleasing to him, not the path that may
be most pleasing to us (Psalm 32:8).

What are some things I should do to discover God's
will for my life?

Proverbs 2:2-5 - Actively look.
Isaiah 2:3 - Let God teach you from his word.
Hosea 6:3 - Seek God's will passionately.
James 1:5 - Pray, asking God.
Acts 21:14 - Let go and let God have his wonderful way

What are some of the things we know are God's will
for us? God's will is that we seek justice and do what
is right, love others, serve others, obey His laws for living,
live under the power and guidance of the Holy
Spirit, and that we do everything as if we were doing it
for Him.

"I know the plans I have for you," says the Lord. "They
are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a
future and a hope." - Jeremiah 29:11

You Matter to God

Partnership - Unatached Articles

Partnership

Walk through the hallways on Sunday mornings and you'll
likely hear and see a flurry of activity, particularly in the
Nursery, Ark Park, and Elementary areas. Have you ever
wondered what goes on in those ministries or why they exist?
Well, our Children's Ministry exists to help kids and
families become Christ-centered in their daily lives.
Amongst other values - like Bible-based teaching, intentional
shepherding, good stewardship, safety, ageappropriateness
, and fun - we highly esteem a partnership
with parents and families. It's our desire to come alongside
of parents and provide resources and support that they can
use for faith building at home.

One of the ways we seek to do this is through the takehome
resources that are sent home each week. In June of
2006, we began using a curriculum with the 1st - 6th graders
called 252 BasicsTM. Based on Luke 2:52, "... and Jesus
grew in wisdom and stature and favor with God and
man" 252 BasicsTM is aimed at helping kids and families
grow in wisdom, faith, and friendship. It is built around three
Basic Truths every child should embrace according to what
Jesus modeled in Luke 2:52.

I need to make the wise choice.
I can trust God no matter what.
I should treat others the way I want to be treated.

Each month we focus on a different biblical virtue such as
respect (the virtue for October). Refrigerator Door Cards
are half sheets of paper designed for parents to put somewhere
they'll see and use them (like the refrigerator door).
These cards contain tidbits about the virtue, the Bible story,
and questions that parents can talk about at home throughout
the week with their children.

There are also weekly God Time Cards that have four days
of devotions, related to the monthly virtue, that parents can
do with their child, or that older kids can do on their own.
Toddlers and Ark Park children also have home connect
resources sent home with them. Check their bags for more
info.

Home connection resources are just one small way we're
seeking to partner with parents in raising spiritual champions
for Christ. I'm excited about the direction God's leading
our church and I'm looking forward to sharing with you
more faith at home initiatives in months and years to
come.

Thanks for allowing the church to partner with you,

Amanda

Now And Then - Unatached Articles

Now and Then...

Spending time with students on a regular basis is
such a privilege! I have the great opportunity to spend my
time with students that have close ties to this church family,
and also time with students that don't have any ties
with this or any other church. My call to this ministry
doesn't separate the two groups of kids. God is calling this
ministry to impact, for Him, every student that comes our
way.

If I were to tell you that students today are different
than when you were a kid, my guess is that it would not be
a big surprise. Well, in fact, student life has changed in
many ways. And at the same time there are many things
that have not changed. Think back when you were in
school. Who is the first adult that comes to mind? I wonder
why you thought of them? Was it because of a friendship?
Did they, in their own way, make you feel important?
Did they allow the things that were important in your
life to become important to them also? Did they push you
to excel when you didn't think it was possible? Did they
give you attention when you felt like no one else seemed to
care? There are probably many reasons why you thought
of the person you did, but my point is that we have probably
all had people in our lives that have had a huge impact
on us. In many ways the impact of others in our lives is a
very critical element in the person we are today. That
doesn't change with culture!

Today, however, students have needs that many
people don't feel like they know how to handle. Whether it
is a feeling of "I don't understand how they think" or "I
don't like how they treat each other" or "I can't even relate
to them" students need the influence of others in the context
of a friendship relationship.

When I hear people talk about how difficult students
can be, some days I shake my head in agreement, but
most of the time I can't help but disagree. Students are
growing up faster, are being forced into difficult decisions
earlier, are dealing with pressures and stresses that many
adults don't even realize, and in turn students appear very
different than when you were a student.

That can be a bit intimidating I realize, but we can't run
from it! They need you! Parents, Grand-parents, Sponsors,
Friends.

As this school year gets fully into swing, will you
pray for the youth staff that works with our students. Their
heart and mind commit to befriend and love students for
just who they are, just where they are, and in the process
show them a clearer picture of what loving Jesus is all
about. Their role in this ministry is vital. Frankly, without
this incredible team of adults, this ministry would be incapacitated.
We would also ask you to pray and see if God
could use you in this ministry. I would really enjoy the opportunity
to share with you the mission and vision of the
student ministry if you're at all interested!
Seeking Him for kids!

Smile - Unatached Articles

ONE

Makes all the Difference

Smile -

to raise the corners of the mouth in an expression of amusement, pleasure, or favor

-an appearance of pleasure or approval

What a simple outward expression of the heart- SMILING! It just warms me to see someone smiling because it's such a natural response to positive feelings. One of my favorite things is to catch someone smiling at me in passing or from across the room. It is such a nice surprise. It causes a smile to come across my face and especially my heart. I remember when each one of my girls smiled at me for the first time. It was a toothless, chubby cheeked expression of pleasure; it was a gift to me! I recorded it in their baby books. I would spend hours doing whatever it took just to see them smile. Their smiles still do a number on me!

There are some people who I rarely see smile and I have to wonder the condition of their heart. Then there are some people who are smiling all the time. They seem to have an unending joy. Those are some very beautiful people to spend time with.

Smiling doesn't just happen with your mouth as the above definition indicates. It affects many parts of your body. A genuine smile can involve the eyes, heart and voice. Have you ever heard a voice on the phone that sounds like a smile is attached to it? I love that !!! A smile can involve arms and legs too. I can even attest to tears attached to a smile! (Maybe that is just a hormonal reaction?)

This summer I have had the opportunity to see several of the students that are involved in Kids Hope. When I mention their mentors name their whole body smiles. You may be wondering what this looks like. .. a smile appears on their face, their eyes light up, a squeal slips out of their lips, hands tend to flap in the air and jumping up and down begins. My heart just swells with joy to know that Kids Hope mentors are causing kids to genuinely smile with their whole body. It is contagious. One can not help but smile upon witnessing such joy. It would take an extraordinary amount of effort to hold back a smile when around someone with such a smiley and exuberant expression. It is so contagious.

Lately, my cheeks have been hurting because I have been full of smiles. Thursday night we had 45 people at our pool party. Most of them were parents and siblings to Kids Hope students. Church attendees were outnumbered by the number of non- church attendees! That was a first for us in Kids Hope!!! I am still smiling over that! Sunday night I saw some wonderful smiles at Converse Elementary as we had our first annual "Kick it Off with Prayer "event. We prayed over the staff, parents, students, families, and mentors. In just a few more days there will be a plethora of smiles at Converse Elementary. Kids Hope mentors will be reconnecting with their students. I have several new people committed to being mentors for Kids Hope. In fact, this is the largest training we have had since we started in 2002. I can't wait to see how God works through them. One thing I know for sure, this will definitely cause smiles to come across teachers, parents, and children's faces and even better, their hearts! Isn't it a nice feeling to know that you were instrumental in causing someone to smile!!!

In Joy,

Pam
